Spring Break Vacation 2010

Just wanted to share some of the images from our vacation to Asheville, NC last week for Spring Break. We stayed on top of a mountain in a beautiful home (courtesy of former client Debbie Van Hise). We let our daughter Kathleen bring a friend, Page, who is a budding photographer and was so energetic with her camera that she made me look like a slacker. Ryan had a crush on her but not to sure about that ten year age gap. It was very cute as he kept trying to woo her. Must of got that from his dad! Anyways, we had lots of fun navigating the winding roads and changes in altitude, went to Carowinds Theme Park, tried some gem mining, hiked to some waterfalls and just overall relaxed. I REALLY NEEDED IT!. That being said, we are back and I am chopping at the bit to get busy on some new projects!

Wedding- Jason and Natalie (Rob)

I am posting this blog from atop Glade Mountain in North Carolina where we are spending a week’s vacation. The amazing home we are staying in is one of our favorite past clients, the Van Hise family. Nothing like waking up to the sun cresting over a mountain and into your bedroom.

The beautiful surroundings reminds me of Jason and Natalie’s wedding at Steinhatchee Landing Resort….truly breathtaking. I could do every wedding there as they have everything you could ever ask for.

This couple (and their awesome bridal party) were so easy to work with. We even snuck in somebody’s docked boat (sshhh) for portraits. It was a great time with real people and that always makes for great images.

Batmitzvah- Noa Jett

We had a great time covering the Batmitzvah celebration for Noa a couple weeks back. She is a great girl who comes from a wonderful family and they sure put on ana amazing celebration.

Its Now Professor Witzel…..But Call Me Rob

As if I didn’t have enough going on right now, I was invited to be an adjunct professor at the University of Florida this semester to teach Advanced Journalism in the college of journalism. My class is wonderful and I have had a great time trying to motivate their young minds.

This is not my first teaching gig as I have an online class for wedding photography that I have written and am weeks away from starting on. Figure I better have as many backups as possible given the economy but I currently have lots of “logs in the “fire.” Thankfully I am blessed to spend every day immersed in the world of photography so it is really not like working. Could not be happier.

Family- Xmas Vacation

Just thought I would share a few frames from our Christmas vacation in Orlando. We had an absolute blast for a week and rented an awesome 4 bedroom pool house just minutes from Disney. Our days were spent at Universal or the Outlet Malls (great deals!!) and our evening were spent having great dinners and chilling at the house. We usually go down after Christmas but this year we decided to go the week before. It worked out great as the crowds were much smaller. With the economy being so lousy there are lots of great deals. I hear they are calling 2009 “the year of the vacation.”

New Website!!

As you might have noticed, we launched a brand new site yesterday and hope you enjoy the new look. It is never easy but I was just amazed at the vast body of incredible work that I had at my disposal.

Trust me, there is lots more work ahead to get everything perfect but I was happy enough to launch and you will see lots of polishing and additions in the coming weeks.

Could not be more thrilled that my friends (well sort of) Ken Block and Andrew Copeland of the band Sister Hazel allowed us to use their music. I think the tone of the songs match the mood of the site. These are Gainesville natives who celebrate lots of local interest in their music. I am a big fan!

Anyway, I am working hard on albums and should have some drafts ready soon for clients to look at. Thanks for your patience.

Weekend Off- Our Kids!

No weddings, no engagement shoots and no consultations. Our first weekend off in a long time and we decided to take our kids, Kathleen and Ryan, out for a shoot in Hawthorne. Such adorable faces and happy-go-lucky personalities makes me questions why there is not more time for these photographs. We treasure the time we have!

Once a Photographer Always a Photographer

I thought this was just too funny to pass up. Now I am proud of my experience as a wedding photographer but once in a while people look at me a little funny when I say I have been doing this since I was a kid.

Below is a picture of me from today and the next one is me at a wedding back in 1985. I was tagging along with my dad who is also a photographer and as you can see, I was pretty happy to be there.

Some things never change.

WPJA Contest

I am happy to report I received a second place finish in the 3rd qtr WPJA contest in the “details” category. I am one to shrug off second place but this competition is so strong and involves the best wedding photojournalists in the world. In that regard. I am very pleased.

The winning image was taken at Joseph and Marisa’s wedding this fall. It is not the kinda image that knocks your socks off but it is the kinda picture that puts a smile on your face.

Contest Winner!!

Finally!

As you may or may not know, I am a member of the Wedding Photojournalists Association. The members are a hand picked group of wedding photographers who specialize in documentary coverage. It was not easy to get in and I have to reapply to renew every year.

OK, so they have a contest four times a year that spans the membership worldwide. Now I have had great success in contests over the years with the Hearst Award being the crown jewel. Well, after entering the WPJA contests for more than a year and only getting a 16th place entry I was starting to sweat it.

Not this time.

I placed 5th overall this recent quarter. That is with international entries in all (10) categories combined. I had a first place entry for humor and a second place in reception. You can see all the latest winners at wpja.com. I am happy to finally do well in this especially difficult contest.

The best part is I will have a gold medallion next to my directory link so when clients search for photographers they associate my name with the very best photojournalists in the group.
